Eivor handing Orthstirr back to Halfdan

Orthstirr was a war hammer which belonged to the Viking leader Halfdan Ragnarsson.

History[edit | edit source]

When Halfdan was fourteen, his father Ragnar Lothbrok gifted him the hammer, which he had taken from a Finnish chief killed in retaliation for the murder of Halfdan's mother Lagertha.[1] Over the years, Orthstirr became Halfdan's signature weapon, and he had a habit of throwing it at his enemies in battle,[2] unknowingly echoing how the Isu Thor was famous for throwing his hammer Mjölnir.[3]

In 876, after becoming King of Northumbria and learning of his trusted advisor Faravid's deceit,[4] Halfdan fell into depression, mourning friends and family he had lost, especially upon hearing the news of his brother Ivarr's death. Venturing with his dog Beonton to Picheringa, he misplaced Orthstirr. With the help of his ally Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan, Halfdan eventually regained both his hammer and his resolve to return to rule Northumbria.[1]
