Nightshade in East Anglia

Nightshades, or Solanaceae, are a family of flowering plants that range from herbs, vines, trees, medicinal plants, and spices. Some of them are poisonous, while many are found to be agricultural crops, like tomatoes and potatoes.

History[edit | edit source]

During the Viking Age in England, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir was assigned by berserkr Bjorn Bloodtooth to find nightshade for his berserkr brew to aid their fight against the Mercian lord who killed Bjorn's wife Alfhild.[1] Eivor agreed and found the deadly nightshade in an East Anglian graveyard. After procuring the poison, Eivor headed back to Bjorn, who used it to make the berserkr brew which proved to be psychedelic once Eivor and Bjorn drank it.[2]

In the Renaissance period, nightshade was collected and utilized by the Assassin Tessa Varzi, who was highly proficient with the poison, as she used the plant in high doses for concentrated poisons or repurpose it as paralyzing dust for unexpected deliveries.[3]

Centuries later during the Industrial Revolution, the Master Assassin Evie Frye acquired the Nightshade Cloak outfit, which was also dyed with the eponymous plant.[4]
