An Athenian marksman

The Marksman was a type of elite archers utilized by both the Athenian military at the time of the Peloponnesian War,[1] and the Abbasid Caliphate during the Islamic Golden Age.[2]

Description[edit | edit source]

Athenian marksmen were among the deadliest soldiers of their time, as they excelled in both ranged and close-quarters combat. Notably, the marksmen's mastery of the bow allowed them to accurately target an entire area by firing a cluster of arrows in the air at once, with the arrows subsequently impaling any unfortunate target within said area as they landed.[3] This made them challenging opponents even for the likes of the legendary misthios Kassandra, who was contracted to eliminate Athenian marksmen on several occasions throughout the Peloponnesian War.[4]

Abbasid marksmen were a slightly improved version of the regular archers, possessing better armor and deadlier precision. They were also more observant of their surroundings, for they could detect the Hidden One Basim ibn Ishaq's eagle companion Enkidu if he was flying overhead. Once a marksman detected and shot at Enkidu, the eagle could not resume his reconnaissance until Basim dealt with the threat.[5]
