Libertalia, also called Libertatia,[1] was a pirate colony and purported utopia established in Madagascar. In 1713, the Bahamian Governor and Caribbean Templar Woodes Rogers traveled to the stronghold in order to subdue the pirates only to find it already its last legs.[2][3] In 1717, the pirate Charles Vane proclaimed the pirate republic of Nassau as the "new Libertalia",[4] though it was ultimately just as short-lived as its predecessor, with the British Empire annexing the proto-state by the end of the next year.[5]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Historically, Libertalia (alternatively Libertatia) is considered a myth with the main account being a dubious mention in Charles Johnson's 1724 book A General History of the Pyrates. While Woodes Rogers' trip to Madagascar is real there is no evidence he encountered Libertalia.
Appearances[edit | edit source]
