Lambeth Bridge is a bridge crossing the River Thames in London, England. Originally built in 1862, the bridge connects the districts of Lambeth and Westminster.

History[edit | edit source]

The bridge was built in 1860 to replace a horse ferry between the Palace of Westminster and Lambeth Palace. Designed by engineer Peter W. Barlow, the bridge was to be toll bridge and had steep approaches on both sides to discourage horse-drawn carriages from using the bridge.[1]

In 1877, the bridge was bought by the Metropolitan Board of Works and soon deteriorated quickly. The suspension cables and girders began rusting a decade after construction, and was later rebuilt in 1932.[1]
