Kronion, also called Mount Kronos, is a mountain located in the Valley of Olympia in Elis, Greece, overlooking the nearby Sanctuary of Olympia.
History[edit | edit source]
At some point a temple had been built on top of the hill, but only ruins of it remained by the 5th century BCE. The statue of the Titan Kronos eating one of his children, however, had survived, and priests made offerings to it each spring equinox.[1]
During the 428 BCE Olympic Games, Kallipateira was caught trying to sneak into the stadium dressed as a man. Since the law forbid women from watching the events, she was caught and accused of impiety by a Priestess of Demeter and a Spartan judge. The punishment for this crime was that she'd be thrown from Kronion to her death, but due to the timely intervention of the Spartan misthios Kassandra, and her subsequent investigation, Kallipateira was acquitted.[2]
