Koroibos' body in his tomb

Koroibos of Elis (fl. 8th century BCE), alternatively Coroebus of Elis, was an Elean cook, baker and athlete who won the stadium race in the first recorded Olympic Games in 776 BCE.

Influence and legacy[edit | edit source]

Pythagoras compared the successes of Kyros of Zarax with those of Koroibos, regarded as high praise.[1]

After his death, he was buried in a tomb located northwest of the Sanctuary of Olympia, on the border between Elis and Arkadia. During the Peloponnesian War Koroibos' tomb was visited and explored by the Spartan misthios Kassandra.[2] During the 428 BCE Olympic Games Kassandra also infiltrated a fort within the Valley of Olympia named after Koroibos.[3]
