Joseph-Napoléon Bonaparte (1768 – 1844), born Giuseppe Buonaparte, was a French diplomat and nobleman, as well as the elder brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. He reigned as King of Spain from 1808 to 1813 as José I.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Joseph and Napoleon were able to enroll in France's Collège d'Autun after their father Carlo switched his allegiance to the French when the nationalist leader Pasquale Paoli was forced to flee Corsica.[1]

In 1808, Napoleon invaded Spain and appointed Joseph as King. He was welcomed by Spanish Francophiles, who believed that collaboration with France would bring modernization, liberty, and the abolition of the Spanish Inquisition.[2]
