Pope John XXII (Latin: Ioannes XXII; c. 1244 – 1334), born Jacques Duèze was Pope from 1316 to his death, succeeding Clement V.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Papal career[edit | edit source]

In 1322, John declared the Franciscans' vow of poverty to be illegal, claiming that Jesus Christ had owned property and encouraged his followers to do the same. This meant that the Franciscans were forced to collect money and land which would go to the Pope.[1][2]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

In a 2012 Animus 2.0 Database entry on Santa Croce, written by Shaun Hastings, he included the Pope's legal declaration within.[1] It was later included in Abstergo Entertainment's Database entry as well in 2014 for the Identity Project.[2]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

Historically, John XXII was responsible for issuing the papal bull Ad ea ex quibus in 1319, which allowed the former order of the Knights Templar to be reconstituted in Portugal as the Military Order of Christ, under the protection of King Denis of Portugal.[3]
