Maharani Jind Kaur (c. 1817 – 1863) was the youngest wife of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the mother of Duleep Singh.

Biography[edit | edit source]

When Duleep became the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire at the age of five, Jind briefly ruled as Regent, but was imprisoned after the First Anglo-Sikh War. Jind would not see her son for over thirteen years. In 1856, Duleep, already in exile in London, attempted to contact her. His correspondence and emissaries were intercepted by the British in India. Due to his persistence and help from Doctor John Spencer Login, they were allowed to meet in January of 1861. The Maharani was deemed no longer a threat to the British imperialist interests in India and allowed to return with Duleep to the United Kingdom. In the two years before she died, she taught her son about his Sikh heritage.[1]
