Altar of Zeus

The Altar of Zeus, also called the Great Altar, was a grand altar devoted to Zeus Horkios, or "Zeus of the Oath",[1] located in Olympia in Elis, Greece.

According to Greek beliefs, the altar was made of sacrificial ashes mixed with water from the Alpheios River. On the final third day of the Olympic Games, the mageiros slaughtered 100 bulls to honor Zeus. This deed gave the Eleans sovereignty over the shrine.[2][3]

History[edit | edit source]

In the 428 BCE Olympics, the misthios Kassandra visited the altar with her friend Barnabas.[4] Later, after her pankration matches against Orion and Erastos ,[5] Barnabas and Alkibiades met Kassandra outside the Altar, where Alkibiades fell ill due to poisoned drink and food he'd ingested earlier during a feast at the Leonidaion.[6]
