Hirate Masahide (平手 政秀, 1492 – 1553), born Hirate Kiyohide (平手 清秀),[1] was a Japanese samurai who served the Oda clan. Masahide was one of Oda Nobuhide's four[2] karō (家老, "house elder") alongside Hayashi Hidesada, Aoyama Nobumasa, and Naitō Shōsuke[3] who became tutors to his son Nobunaga after he was officially designated as heir. Masahide and the other three taught Nobunaga how to deal with military strategy and politics, though the young man initially did not take the lessons seriously and preferred to spend time elsewhere. After Nobuhide's death in 1551, Masahide protested Nobunaga's reckless behavior by committing suicide, which shocked the young man into focusing on his obligations as head of the clan.[2]
