A hippodrome (Greek: ἱππόδρομος) is a type of ancient Greek arena designed specifically for the racing of horses and chariots.

History[edit | edit source]

With the introduction of the Olympic Games, hippodromes were used to host many chariot-racing events, the most notable being the Hippodrome at the Sanctuary of Olympia in Elis, Greece.[1]

In 48 BCE, the Lageion Hippodrome in Alexandria, Egypt, served as the home to several chariot-racing teams, including the Prasina Green and the Veneta Blue.[2] The city of Constantinople also had a hippodrome, but as it was built according to Roman ideas, it was more of a circus.[3]
