Hastein was a 9th century Danish Viking chieftain.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Hastein spent many years from the 860s to the 880s raiding Frankish territory in Europe.[2] One such expedition was a joint venture with Ragnar Lothbrok's son Björn Ironside sailing a fleet of 62 longships from the Loire to the Mediterranean Sea, where they harassed the Emirate of Córdoba.[1] In the early 890s, Hastein and his men landed on the shores of Kent, England, only to quickly meet opposition from ætheling Edward the Elder and his brother-in-law Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians. In 893, Hastein took Buttington Fortress, and Æthelred's subsequent siege to reclaim it ended in a stalemate. Only when Hastein's men were starving did he exit the fort and try a last push against Æthelred's army, but they were quickly defeated and the survivors fled into Essex, Hastein among them.[2]
