Hamtun Blockade

The Hamtun Blockade was a Saxon-guarded blockade that was located in southern Hamtunscire, England.

History[edit | edit source]

In 878, jarlskona Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan and Viking leader Guthrum searched the area for his captive men. Locating them, they attacked the Saxon soldiers at the blockade and freed his men. After they freed Guthrum's men, Eivor subsequently destroyed the chain, allowing any ship to pass on the river.[1]

Hamtun was the Saxon settlement that gave its name to the surrounding county of Hamtunscire, now Hampshire. It developed into the present-day city of Southampton, the largest settlement in the county.[2]
