Hadrian (Latin: Caesar Publius Aelius Traianus Hadrianus Augustus; 76 – 138), born Publius Aelius Hadrianus, was Roman Emperor from 117 to his death.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Some years after the Temple of Zeus in Cyrene was destroyed during the Jewish rebellion in 115 CE, Hadrian had it reconstructed, but chose not to rebuild the outer portico and instead had the columns restored in Corinthian marble.[1]
In 122, he commissioned the building of Hadrian's Wall in an attempt to keep the Roman province of Britannia secure from the Britons and Picts to the north.[2] That same year, the Hidden One Caius from the Londinium bureau attempted to kill Hadrian, but he was apprehended and killed.[3]
Hadrian did not see the restoration of the Temple of Zeus to its completion, as he died on 10 July 138.[1] Following his death, he was buried in a mausoleum deliberately designed to be larger than the Mausoleum of Augustus. When Alaric I and the Visigoths sacked Rome in 410, Hadrian's ashes were scattered.[4][5][6]
