Pope Gregory IX (c. 1145 – 22 August 1241), born Ugolino di Conti, was Pope from 1227 to his death.

In 1231, he initiated the Medieval Inquisition by appointing a number of Papal Inquisitors, mostly Dominicans and Franciscans, to bring order to the process of dealing with heresy and prevent mob justice.[1]
