The Green Dragon Tavern was a small tavern located in Boston's North End.
History[edit | edit source]
The tavern was owned by William Douglass until his death in 1752, when the property passed to his daughter, Catherine Kerr, and nephew, Cornelius Douglass.[1] After Haytham Kenway's arrival to the British colonies in North America in 1754, and at the suggestion of Charles Lee, the Green Dragon Tavern became a meeting place for the Colonial Rite of the Templar Order.[2]
In 1766, the tavern was bought by the Freemasons and renamed "The Freemasons Arms"; since the sign above the door was still a green dragon, people kept using the Green Dragon Tavern name. Catherine stayed on as the innkeeper.[1]
During the American Revolution, the Green Dragon Tavern was frequently visited by the Sons of Liberty, namely Samuel Adams and Paul Revere, as a place to plot and conspire, which earned it the nickname "Headquarters of the Revolution".[1] During his search for Charles Lee, Ratonhnhaké:ton briefly visted the tavern to intimidate one of Lee's henchmen into revealing his target's location.[3]
The building was demolished in 1854, and a new Green Dragon Tavern was built elsewhere in the North End. In 2012, the Assassin cell consisting of William Miles, Desmond Miles, Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane visited the tavern after having stolen a First Civilization power source from a building near the One World Trade Center in New York City.[4]
