The Granny Smith was a small ship captained by Byron Jackson, an English smuggler that sailed across the east coast of England.
History[edit | edit source]
On 7 February 1788, while transporting goods that the English government had increased the prices of, Jackson also smuggled both the French Templar Élise de la Serre and her associate Hélène to England after saving them in Calais. At sea for the next two days, Élise tried to teach Hélène etiquette so that the latter could pose as her handmaiden in England, and also spent time with Jackson, who sparred with her and offered her advice. Upon their arrival in Dover, the two women thanked Jackson and left for London to meet the Carroll family at their home in Mayfair.[1]
