Ginnungagap was the vast empty space between the Nine Realms where the fires of Múspellsheimr met with the cold of Jötunheimr.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In the Isu Era, the abyss of Ginnungagap became larger after the Æsir brothers Vé, Vili, and Odin killed the proto-being Ymir, who was born in the void, and whose corpse flourished the land with grass, waters, and mountains.[2]
In Eivor Varinsdottir's visions of Odin's time in Svartálfaheimr, Odin wore the Jotun Armor Set after defeating five leaders of Suttungr's Outriders and ventured through one of the realm's dams portals. On a cliff in the void, he met the outriders' commander, Riekr. Upon looking at his armor and realizing that her scouts had been killed, she challenged Odin to a duel but lost after a lengthy fight and was killed, ending the outriders' influence in Svartálfaheimr.[3]
Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]
Although the character Riekr describes Ginnungagap as a "land between realms", a concept piece by Detelin Yonchev that focuses on the doorway is titled "Angarboda's Wolves",[4] despite Angrboða not having any stated connection to either this place nor does she command a faction referred to as wolves like how Suttungr has his "Outriders" and Sinmara has her "Chosen".
