Ginkaku-ji (銀閣寺), also known as the Silver Pavilion, is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan.
History[edit | edit source]
When the temple's construction took place in the early 1480s, just after the Ōnin War,[1] the former shōgun Ashikaga Yoshimasa[2] could not afford to adorn the building with the precious metal it is named after in the same manner the Gold Pavilion was.[1] Regardless of the decorations, Yoshimasa moved into the pavilion, where he led a life of leisure and art with his friends, ignoring the fighting in Kyoto at the time.[2]
In 1582, the Kakushiba ikki members Fujibayashi Naoe and Yasuke visited the temple and recovered two lost pages scattered across its grounds.[3]
