Sir George Downing, 1st Baronet (c. 1624 – c.  1684) was an English finance official, diplomat, and spymaster. During the English Civil War he served as Oliver Cromwell's Chief of Intelligence.

Biography[edit | edit source]

In April 1660, after the civil war had ended and the monarchy had regained power, to avoid execution Downing switched sides and pledged his loyalty to King Charles II.[1]

In around 1682, Downing gained ownership of a cul-de-sac of buildings.[2] Naming the street after himself, the residence of the Prime Ministers would eventually be known as 10 Downing Street.[1]
