Historically, Alexander II is famous in Russia for liberating the serfs, slaves bound to the land, from bondage in 1861. As a part of his policy of industrialization, Alexander abolished serfdom to bring Russia into the Industrial Age, thus earning himself the title of "The Tsar Liberator".  Unfortunately, liberation came with a price; aristocratic landlords made it difficult for the serfs to buy their own land.  As a Templar, Alexander himself probably ensured this through use of the Staff of Eden.  Alexander had also, earlier in his reign, ended the Crimean War, which had been started by his father, Nicholas I.

Eventually, the Tsar's promises began to fall flat, and so a group of revolutionaries in Russia, who called themselves, the People's Will, began plotting Alexander's murder, possibly with the aid of Assassins.  After numerous failed attempts, the Assassins, led by Sofia Perovskya, killed Alexander in St. Petersburg in 1881.

Alexander II was a member of the Templar Order and was assassinated by Assassins to lower the Templars' control over the Russian Empire. He was succeeded by his son Alexander III, also a Templar.

This article is about the Tsar of Russia from 1855 to 1881. For other uses, see Alexander.

Alexander II Nikolaievich (Russian: Александр II Николаевич; 1818 – 1881), born Alexander Nikolaievich Romanov and also known as Alexander the Liberator, was the Emperor of the Russian Empire from 3 March 1855 until his death, the King of Congress Poland, and the Grand Duke of Finland. Secretly, he was influenced by the Templar Order.[1] He was succeeded by his son Alexander III.

Biography[edit | edit source]

During his reign, Alexander made several reforms in an attempt to end serfdom in Russia. These reforms were highly unpopular, drawing criticism from both the nobility and those who believed that the reforms were not going far enough.[2] Feeling that the Tsar's promises were falling flat, a group of revolutionaries known as the People's Will eventually began plotting his murder.[3]

Despite numerous failed attempts that began in 1866 with a botched shooting by the Russian Assassin Dmitry Karakozov,[3] the Assassins Ignacy Hryniewiecki[4] and Nikolai Rysakov[5] succeeded in killing Alexander in 1881 with a bomb attack on the imperial carriage in Saint Petersburg.[1]
