Friday was a sailor of West African descent, serving on the deck of the Emperor, a privateer ship, during the early 18th century.

In late 1712, Friday became a mentor to Edward Kenway, who had recently taken up his first posting as a sailor aboard the Emperor. He advised Edward to ignore Blaney's aggression and prevented him from stepping forward when the captain, Alexander Dolzell, asked if anyone was against becoming a pirate. Friday's counsel proved to be wise when the five sailors who wanted to leave the crew were thrown overboard by the first mate, Trafford.
