A fabric is a material made through a number of processes, like weaving or stitching, that may be used in the production of further products, such as clothing. Cloth is used synonymously, but often specifically refers to a piece of fabric that has been processed or cut; wool, silk, cotton, and linen are examples of widely used textiles.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
In the 9th century, the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir collected fabric from chests around England to upgrade her arrow quiver and ration pouch to be able to hold more.[2]
During the Reconquista, the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins used many types of fabric, including silk, in order to create various accessories and pieces of armor.[3]
In the 18th century, cloth formed the largest import, and tailoring was largest trade in metropolitan areas for an even longer period. The fitted clothing in this period would often be of similar design, with only the fabric in which they were cut marking the social standing of the wearer.[4]
During the American Revolutionary War for independence from the British Empire, the Colonial Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton and the artisans living at the Davenport Homestead made ample use of fabric in their products, including wool and linsey-woolsey fabric.[5]
