Edward VII (Albert Edward; 1841 – 1910) was the King of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India from 1901 until his death. He was the eldest son of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Queen Victoria, who nicknamed him "Bertie". He was married to Alexandra of Denmark.[1]

Biography[edit | edit source]

Birth of his son[edit | edit source]

On 13 June 1865, shortly after his son's birth, Edward received a royal correspondence from his mother, who expressed general disappointment with the proposed names for his child, though she preferred the suggested "Frederic" above "George". She emphasized the tradition of many European monarchies in having children of both genders carry their respective grandparents' names to mark family lines,[2] and in a seeming compromise, Edward named his son George Frederick Ernest Albert.[3]

Traveling to Russia[edit | edit source]

In October 1866, Edward left to Saint Petersburg, Russia for his sister-in-law Dagmar's wedding to Alexander III. Victoria wrote to him on 16 October in reply to an earlier message and expressed reservations about the trip's timing and criticized its purpose as being for another wedding—Edward had also planned to attend Dagmar's marriage to Tsesarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich two years prior—instead of traveling just to visit a city whose political importance she questioned. She closed by wishing Edward would spend more time at home, having hoped in vain for it to have happened when he was already away.[4]

Later commendations[edit | edit source]

On 22 May 1867, Edward received a letter from his mother just before her birthday. In it, she informed him that she would be bestowing to him and other family members a number of commendations. Edward was given the Insignia of the Order of the Thistle, which he had much desired, his younger brother Arthur would join the Order of the Sacred Garter, his brother-in-law Christian was awarded the position of Ranger of Windsor Great Park, and his half-cousin Victor became Constable of the Round to Tower instead of his brother Alfred as was originally planned.[5]
