Datura is a genus of nine species of highly poisonous, flowering plants belonging to the nightshade family that were historically used as poisons and hallucinogens.[1] One species, Datura stramonium, is known to cause hallucinations, increased heart rate, as well as an aversion to sunlight, and was believed to be capable of turning people into "mindless and utterly compliant zombies".[2]
History[edit | edit source]
In the early 16th century, the Ottoman Brotherhood of Assassins distilled their poison from the datura plant into a powder which they used in bomb-making.[3] Master Assassin Piri Reis taught the Italian Assassins' Mentor Ezio Auditore how to craft and use the datura powder bombs.[4] Around the same time, Mirela Djuric also made ample use of the poison, being spotted purchasing some by an Assassin apprentice moments before her final clash with the Brotherhood.[5]
In 1868, datura stramonium was used as one of the main ingredients in Starrick's Soothing Syrup, a concoction made by the Starrick Brewing Company as a means to control London's population through its addiction.[2]
