Long before [[human]]s made their mark, the [[Al-Ula|AlUla]] region had extraordinary natural characteristics. Massive {{Wiki|sandstone}} plateaus emerged in the region around thirty million years ago due to powerful tectonic shifts. Slowly, wind and rain {{Wiki|Erosion|broke down}} these plateaus, resulting in the sandstone outcrops of various sizes and shapes we see today.
