Son of the Caliph Al Mutalwakkil [sic] and his favorite consort, Qabiha, Abu 'Abdallah was nursed by his mother on tales of ambition and success. Impetuous, lonely, and eager for his father's approval, he yearned to be at the center of the action—and soon came to regret his wish.
