The Agiad dynasty was an ancient Greek dynasty which ruled the ancient city-state of Sparta in Ancient Greece. Along the Eurypontids, the Agiads claim descent from the legendary hero Herakles and ruled the city from the Dark Ages until the Hellenistic period.[1]
In the 5th century BCE, the Agiad dynasty saw a prominent involvement in the Greco-Persian Wars. King Leonidas fought to his last breath at the Battle of Thermopylae against the Persian Empire. His grandaughter Kassandra was a prominent misthios during the Peloponnesian War, working for both the Peloponnesian League and the Delian League.[2]
