The Dalby Forest is a forest located in North Yorkshire, England. The forest in the 9th century was largely dominated by snow and inhabited by packs of wolves. Because of this, human activity in the forest is extremely sparse, save for a small altar in the middle of the forest. This also gave rise to Yorkshire residents claiming to hear soft whispers and laughters of children at night.[1]
In the 870s, the forest and the largely secluded altar was explored by the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir during her time in the shire.[2]
