The Convent of the Daughters of Calvary (French: Couvent des Filles du Calvaire) was a Benedictine nunnery and convent in Paris, France.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
Located at the heart of the lively district at the rue de Turenne, the convent was built for the Congregation of Our Lady of Calvary, a religious chapter founded in 1622 by Père Joseph.[2] At some point during the French Revolution, a group of thugs terrorized the nuns at the convent and the surrounding neighborhood. In response, the French Assassins' reigning Council had Arno Dorian kill the thugs' leader.[3]
Eventually, however, as part of a sweeping dechristianization of France during the French Revolution, the revolutionaries had the congregation formally dissolved, expelled the remaining nuns, and seized the church's assets.[2] They commenced selling artifacts and property in the name of the biens nationaux ("national good"),[1] justified as overdue wealth redistribution to poor commoners, and transformed the chapel into the theater called "le boudoir des muses". The new theater situated next to the famous "boulevard du crime", which was named for the numerous melodramas that played in its theaters. In 1807, Emperor Napoleon I's government ordered that the convent's theater be closed, without giving a reason why. Today, nothing of the convent remains.[2]
