A classic claymore.

A claymore is a Scottish two-handed sword.

Description[edit | edit source]

A Scottish development of the longsword design, the claymore is a double-edged straight sword with an extensive, heavy blade that requires two hands to wield. To accommodate this, claymores typically have elongated grips which provide ample room for both hands. Their defining feature that sets them apart from the similar German zweihänders, however, is their unique cross-guard design, which consists of forward-sloping quillons terminating in quatrefoils.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

The claymore was a signature weapon of Scottish mercenaries. These mercenaries introduced the heavy sword to other European countries such as France where it remained in use as late as the French Revolution by paramilitary organizations such as the Parisian Brotherhood of Assassins.[1]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

A number of two-handed swords appear in Assassin's Creed: Unity, but they are all haphazardly designated claymore, long sword, bastard sword, great sword etc. without distinction, resulting in every greatsword being mislabelled. As a result, neither the Claymore nor the Great Claymore in the game are proper claymores, being zweihänders instead. The only actual claymore is the Long Sword—also erroneously named.
