A basket-hilted sword, also known as a broadsword, is type of European double-edged sword with a wide blade characterized by a basket-shaped guard.
History[edit | edit source]
One of the most prominent form of basket-hilted swords in Italy during the Renaissance was the schiavona which had an especially wide, double-edged blade and an elaborate guard consisting of many twisting bars.[1][2][3] Varieties of the schiavona would continue to see use as late as the French Revolution in Paris.[4] In the meantime, basket-hilted swords of other designs were developed and used throughout the 18th century. Scottish Broadswords, typified by solid guards that covered the entire hilt, were prevalent in the Americas from the Golden Age of Piracy to at least the Seven Years' War. The French in particular employed a wide range of broadswords with diverse guard designs such as the Snake-Hilted Sword.[4]
