La bande noire (English: "The black band") was a black market gang active in Paris, France, in the aftermath of the French Revolution.
Fabre d'Églantine was a member the gang, and participated in a fake auction they held for a dilapidated church. However, the gendarme Jean-Baptiste Dossonville infiltrated the auction with Arno Dorian, and outbid d'Églantine. After Dossonville accused the auctioneer of corruption, the former was attacked by the guards. With Arno's help, Dossonville persevered and ended the auction.[1]
