Turkey is the premier nation of the Turkic peoples. It historically originated as a large khanate in Central Asia in 552 but over the course of centuries, by circumstance, migrated into Western Asia and conquered it as the Seljuk Empire in the 11th century.
As a result of the dismemberment of the Seljuk state during the period of the Crusades and its eventual conquest by the Mongol Empire, by the end of the 13th century, only a small remnant state, the Sultanate of Rum, survived in Anatolia.
