An apothecary was a shop attended to by a doctor which dispensed medicine to physicians, surgeons, and patients. They were most prevalent during the Renaissance, when they were found in most European cities, and served as a precursor to modern pharmacies.[1]
In the 15th century, Monteriggioni had its own apothecary, while in cities like Florence or Rome doctors were often standing on the street by a portable apothecary stand. For 50 florins, they helped the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze with his ailments, or he could buy a bottle of medicine for 75 florins.[2][3] During the same period, the Spanish Assassins had their own apothecary at their headquarters, where they crafted medicine to treat their injured members.[4]
Apothecaries were also present in Constantinople in the early 16th century, although most of them were forced to shut down their businesses by the Templars.
