Frederick Barbarossa (1122 – 1190) was Holy Roman Emperor from 2 January 1155 until his death.[1]

Having previously served in the disastrous Second Crusade,[2] Frederick rejoined the Crusaders in their third holy war attempt, this time against the Ayyubid Sultanate under Saladin. He led a large army which included 20,000 mounted knights,[3] but while crossing the Göksu River[1] in the mountains of what is now Turkey, Frederick's horse slipped and he drowned in the swift current. The majority of his army returned to Germany,[2] though the Austrian Duke Leopold V took command of the remaining 5,000 men and led them to the Holy Land.[3]
