Salvador, originally São Salvador da Bahia de Todos os Santos, is the capital city of the State of Bahia in Brazil.[1] It was the capital of Brazil[2] from 1549 to 1763, when Rio de Janeiro became the capital.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
Salvador thrived in the early 18th century as many eager Europeans arrived hoping to make a living in the Americas.[2] Its lower city was a major financial center because of the teeming markets and its status as a port.[3] The Welsh pirate Edward Kenway, seeing Salvador as one of the best places to meet traders and earn quick money,[4] shipped wine, cocoa pods,[2] rice,[3] and plenty of tobacco to the city.[4]
