Trafford (died January 1713) was the first mate of the Emperor, a privateer-turned-pirate ship on which Edward Kenway served.
Biography[edit | edit source]
Serving under Captain Alexander Dolzell, Trafford turned to piracy alongside him when Dolzell foresaw the end of the War of the Spanish Succession and the need for privateers. On Dolzell's orders, he dealt with five sailors who refused to commit themselves to the pirate life, throwing them into the sea.[1]
In January 1713, Trafford partook in the Emperor's capture of the East India Company merchant ship Amazon Galley. Together with Dolzell, he interrogated and tortured the ship's captain, Benjamin Pritchard, before leaving him under the guard of Edward Kenway and Blaney. However, while the pirates plundered the Amazon Galley's cargo, the British privateer Edward Thatch arrived on the Sea Dog's Bite and attacked them.[1]
In the resulting battle, the Emperor's crew was overwhelmed, and Blaney, seeing an opportunity to preserve his own life, offered to join the privateers and kill the remaining pirates. Enraged at his treachery, Trafford attacked Blaney, but the larger man easily overpowered and killed him.[1]
