Sir Henry Morgan (c. 1635 – 1688) was a Welsh privateer, pirate, and admiral of the English Royal Navy. While serving in the Navy, his primary targets were Spanish settlements and fleets, and his accomplishments included leading the attack to liberate Jamaica from Spanish control; after taking the island, he was named Lieutenant Governor. As a pirate, he became notorious around the West Indies.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Naval career[edit | edit source]

After many operations serving as an attempt at seize Jamaica from Spanish control, Morgan was appointed commander of the buccaneers in 1668.[1] In July of that year, he and his crew successfully raided Portobelo.[2]

In April 1669, when sailing out of Lake Maracaibo Henry Morgan was blocked by a Spanish-occupied fort and three ships,[3] among them was the Magdalena which Morgan destroyed with a fire ship.[4] Later that year,[5] owing from a alcohol-induced stupor, his flagship the HMS Oxford was accidentally blown up off the coast of Île à Vache, Haiti the night before their attack on Cartagena.[4] Morgan, who was onboard the Oxford at the time, narrowly escaped the explosion.[6]

From December 1670 until March 1671,[7][1] he and his pirates captured and razed Panama City, during which the Dutch buccaneer Laurens Prins served under him as an officer during the city's siege.[8] Such actions were in direct violation of the treaty between England and Spain.[1] Following the raid, Morgan stole an ancient artifact.[4]

At a later point in time, Morgan's house was robbed and his personal Astrolabe was stolen.[4]

Legacy[edit | edit source]

In 1711, the Royal Navy privateer-recruiter Dylan Wallace mentioned Morgan among other great privateers, in an effort to convince the sheep-farmer Edward Kenway to join up,[9] which he later would aboard the Emperor.[10] By 1715, Morgan's pistols, swords, and iconic redingote had been placed on Black Island, where they were subsequently discovered and reclaimed by Edward Kenway, then a pirate.[11] Between 1716 and 1718, the French pirate, Alonzo Batilla recovered many treasures relating to Morgan and his many adventures.[4]
