I wanted to ask you something. Which is... what's your name?
This article title is conjecture. Although the article subject is canon, no official name for it has been given.

The Acre Citadel was a large fortress located in the Rich District of Acre, as well as the main residence of Richard I of England during the Third Crusade.

History[edit | edit source]

The citadel was essentially a small town that was heavily fortified against outside attacks, with massive walls and battlements. It contained the quarters of William of Montferrat, a Templar who governed Acre whilst Richard was absent fighting the Saracens.[1]

In 1191, a team of Assassins was sent by their Mentor, Al Mualim, to keep William inside the citadel and allow Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad to kill him.[2] The team eliminated Templar patrols,[3] Crusaders,[4] and William's personal bodyguard, Isembart, from whom they learned that William knew of Altaïr's mission and had laid an ambush for the Assassin.[5] The team subsequently disrupted the ambush,[6] allowing Altaïr to infiltrate the heavily guarded fortress, eliminate the archers patrolling its perimeter, and assassinate William.[1]

Following William's death, the Templars assumed control of the citadel, from where they planned to relocate to Cyprus to avoid further Assassin incursions. In October 1191, as the Templar fleet departed Acre, Altaïr led an attack on the citadel but was too late to prevent the fleet's escape. However, he did manage to defeat and capture Maria Thorpe, who had been left behind by the new Templar Grand Master, Armand Bouchart. Altaïr then decided to travel to Cyprus himself to investigate the Templars' activities.[7]

A few years later, in 1197, Altaïr and Maria, now married, met at the top of the citadel's tower, where they made love and subsequently conceived a son.[8]

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

The citadel is based on a real Templar fortress and castle that existed in Acre.[9]
