Elizabeth Alexandra Mary (21 April 1926 – 8 September 2022) was the Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth territories from 1952 until her death in 2022 under the regnal name Elizabeth II. Her reign of almost 71 years is the longest of any British monarch.[1]
Biography[edit | edit source]
At her official coronation ceremony in 1953, her mother Elizabeth the Queen Mother was present and wore the coronation jewel; the Koh-i-Noor,[2] though unknowingly a fake.[3] Instead of wearing the Koh-i-Noor herself, Elizabeth II elected to wear simple brooches embedded with the Cullinan Diamonds mined from South Africa.[2]
Following the unexpected death of her ex-daughter-in-law, Diana in 1997,[4] public opinion regarding the Queen's image was soured for a time with many citizens viewing her negatively.[5]
In 2012, to commemorate her Diamond Jubilee,[6] the clock tower Big Ben was renamed to "Elizabeth Tower" in her honor.[7]
