The Hôtel Fieubet was a hôtel particulier in Le Marais, Paris, during the French Revolution.
History[edit | edit source]
The Hôtel Fieubet consisted of a spectacular accumulation of styles, the general inconsistency of which gave the building's edifice a charming appearance. The site of the structure was chosen by Charles V of France for his Hôtel Saint-Pol, located away from the noise and acitivity around the Louvre.[1]
In 1676, the parliamentary advisor Gaspard Fieubet commissioned Jules-Hardouin Mansat to draw plans for a new residence. A charming and popular poet, Fieubet was a friend of Jean de La Fontaine and Madame de Sévigné, in addition to being Councillor of State and chancellor to Queen Maria Theresa. Thus, financial means were no issue in constructing the building.[1]
By the French Revolution, the Hôtel Fieubet had become the residence of the Crimson Rose, a member of the Templar Order responsible for rescuing numerous Templar aristocrats from the guillotine through his organization, the Crimson League. As he was about to be ambushed by troops under Chauvelin, the Assassin Arno Dorian came to his rescue, having been sent to do so by the Chevalier d'Éon.[2]
With neither one of them aware of the other's true affiliation, Arno and the Crimson Rose began working together to rescue aristocrats.[3] Once the Chevalier d'Éon informed Arno of the Crimson Rose's true identity, however, Arno eliminated all members of the Crimson League before returning to the Hôtel Fieubet to kill the Crimson Rose himself.[4]
