A general store is a shop that carries general merchandise. Unlike the specialized merchants of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, general stores offered a variety of supplies in the Caribbean and Colonial America during the 18th century, ranging from melee and ranged weapons, ammunition, hunting supplies, outfits, and maps.[1][2][3]
The stores in the Colonies were located in major cities such as Boston and New York, and in towns in the Frontier. The Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton could sell his hunting spoils at any of these stores.[1]
Each store additionally possessed an accounting book, through which Ratonhnhaké:ton could trade the goods crafted by the artisans of the Davenport Homestead. He could also use them to manage his trade convoys, which were sent to other colonies across America.[1]
In the Caribbean, general stores were located in the cities of Havana, Kingston, and Nassau, as well as many minor islands. One store was also established by Edward Kenway and built on Great Inagua. Unlike the stores found in the Colonies, those around the West Indies allowed Edward to purchase hunting goods to be used for crafting, as well as sell them.[2]
During the Seven Years' War, general stores in New York, the River Valley, and the North Atlantic offered similar services, allowing the Templar Shay Cormac to purchase hunting goods or sell his gains. Like Ratonhnhaké:ton and Edward, Shay could also buy a variety of weapons, ammunition, and outfits from these stores.[3]
