By chance, Meng Tian was cooperating with a ''[[Wei Yu's disciple|youxia]]'' to investigate the collusion of [[Yang Duanhe]] and the Xiongnu and advised the ''youxia'' that they might find answers with one of the prisoners. While Modu was in the midst of being interrogated, the ''youxia'' broke him out of jail in hopes that this would establish a debt he would have to honour by acting as their liaison with the Xiongnu.<ref name="Nobility of the Xiongnu" />
