==History==
In 871, after the [[Battle of Bedwyn]], [[Alfred the Great|Alfred]] and his forces stationed themselves at Wiltun after their loss to Vikings. Within days, Alfred met the Vikings again during the [[Battle of Meretun]]. After the battle, the newly crowned King Alfred met with Viking leaders [[Guthrum]] and [[Halfdan Ragnarsson]] for a truce. The Vikings received silver and gold, while in return, they do not cross over the [[River Avon|Avon]] river back into [[Wessex]].
