The '''Northern Expedition''' was Generalissimo [[Chiang Kai-shek]]'s military campaign to unify [[China]] under the [[Kuomintang|Nationalist Party]], also known as the Kuomintang (KMT), and end the [[Warlord Era]]. It is so named because it was a northward push from the KMT's base in {{wiki|Guangdong}} to [[Shanghai]] and beyond, with the ultimate aim of capturing [[Beijing]], the internationally recognized capital.<ref name="Mitter 2016">Mitter, Rana.
