Father '''Bertwald''' was an [[Anglo-Saxon]] monk who served as abbot of the [[Isle of Ely Monastery]] in [[East Anglia]] around 870.

As the head of the monastery alongside abbess [[Magdalena]], Bertwald presided over many of the religious ceremonies and prayers where the nuns and monks were required to attend. One day, after one of the morning prayers, Bertwald retreated to the infirmary where he would remain. There, he received met Brother [[Ealric]], a new monk who carried the sick Brother Oswine to the infirmary to seek aid. When Ealric asked about Oswine's symptoms, Bertwald admitted he was not familiar with ailment and directed Ealric to the scriptorium where he may find what he needed, or to seek Sister Winifred for aid.<ref name="Through Faith & Fire">''[[Discovery Tour: Viking Age]]'' – [[Through Faith & Fire]]</ref>
