Mongol encampment in Western Xia, 1227

The Western Xia, officially the Great Xia (大夏), was a Tangut-led imperial dynasty of China that ruled from 1038 until its destruction by the Mongol Empire in 1227. Its capital was Xingqing.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Beginning in 1225,[2] Mongol leader Genghis Khan, having successfully completed other conquests throught the continent that tripled the size of his empire,[3] prepared his armies for another campaign in Xia, seeking to punish them for not complying with their vassal obligations.[2] The Mongol Empire's expansion also caught the attention of the Assassins, both from the Levantine Branch and the local Mongolian Brotherhood.[4] Between 1226 and 1227, the Khan had received a serious injury that led to an illness, but despite the urging of his sons and commanders, he insisted on continuing the invasion, partly due to his outrage at the taunting of the Xia's leading commander.[5]

In 1227, the Mongols advanced towards the Xia capital and besieged it, making camp nearby.[4] There, with the combined efforts of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad, Maria Thorpe, Darim Ibn-La'Ahad, Qulan Gal and Nergüi, the Assassins managed to kill the Khan.[4][6][7] This was not enough to stop the Mongols, however. His death was kept a secret and the attacks continued. In September 1227, the Xia Emperor surrended and was executed, with the pillaging of the capital and the slaughter of the population soon following.[1]
